Merseyside vs. Scotland

Today was our first match as the Merseyside team. Everyone was nervous but also excited. Some of the older girls had recently played the same Scottish team in a tournament in Scotland. For some of the players it was their first real handball game.

We were playing two halves of 20 minute games. We got the game off to a good start with a strong team playing. Paige was playing line and managed to slot the first goal in to the corner. But unfortunately Scotland got a few goals up with one of there best players scoring three goals in the first half. Paige then managed to score again from the line slipping the ball past the goalie. We were losing 3-2 until Scotland scored there last goal just before half time.

After a quick drinks break at half time and a quick team talk we started again. Our team was getting tired playing such long games which we were not used to. Scotland managed to get a few more goals past us, but luckily the teams passes just kept coming through to the line and Paige scored. Merseyside just kept on fighting but a few bad passes lead to Scotland intercepting and scoring some great goals. Caitlin made some brilliant saves, but the goals just weren't going in for Merseyside we were shooting straight at the keeper. Jade lobbed the keeper to score a goal, but Scotland still kept going and scored some more goals. They were a much more experienced team and have been playing together much longer then we have! At the end of the game the score was 11-5 I think the team did very well though and this will give us some experience for next time we play. Well done Girls was very proud for our first match together.

Merseyside : Lancashire game

Straight after our game against Scotland we were playing again against Lancashire. We were a little less confident playing the Lancashire team as one of their players plays for The England and Great Britain team, but we kept our heads high and tried our best. Some of the team were also very tired, not that used to playing such long games! We got off to a great start with Paige scoring the first two goals, but Lancashire just kept equalizing us and pulling ahead. Sam, Laura and Emily did brilliantly stopping Lancashire's star player scoring too many goals and they were resorting to launching the ball from the nine metre line. Jess had a few unlucky shots with the keeper only just saving it. By half time it was very close, we were winning 7-6 with still 20 minutes to go.

We went back on ready for a win. Lauren scored some brilliant goals putting all her power into it. There was plenty of tension throughout the rest of the game as we would pull ahead and then Lancashire would catch up again. We got our heads in the game and got some good shots on target, but unfortunately their keeper stopped them. Kristina and Katie played very well starting the driving for the rest of the team and keeping them on their toes, pulling them across to defend the wings. With only a few minutes to go we were in the lead and trying to keep going, even though we really was tired now playing almost and hour and a half of handball. In the last few minutes Lancashire's best player scored three goals but we still won the game 13-11. Well done girlies it was a brilliant game! Was really proud of you all.
